No, GTA 6 does not launch with online multiplayer. Rockstar describes the 19 November 2026 release as a single-player experience. Official
Rockstar has not announced when an online mode will arrive. Take-Two's CEO has said not to expect a multiplayer reveal soon. Reported
GTA Online turned GTA V into a game people played for over a decade, so whether GTA 6 launches with online is a big question. The short version: the launch is single-player, an online mode is widely expected later, and nobody at Rockstar has given a date. This page sorts what has been said from what has been assumed, and explains what it means for PS Plus, Game Pass and your internet connection.

What Rockstar and Take-Two have said
Rockstar's wording at the price announcement was that GTA 6 "features a single-player experience". That tells you what is in the box on 19 November 2026 without ruling out what comes later. Rockstar has not announced a GTA Online successor, a roadmap or a beta.
Take-Two's chief executive, Strauss Zelnick, has talked about GTA 6 only in terms of its single-player game, and on a podcast in August 2026 reportedly said not to expect a multiplayer reveal any time soon. Some analysts guess an online mode could be a year or two away. That is speculation, not a Rockstar timeline.
What this means for PS Plus and Game Pass
On PS5 and Xbox, paid subscriptions are needed for online multiplayer, not for single-player play. Since GTA 6 launches without online, you should not need PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass to play it. When an online mode arrives, it will most likely need PS Plus Essential on PS5 and Game Pass Essential (the tier that replaced Core) on Xbox, as GTA Online does today. Do you need internet for single-player?
You need internet to download GTA 6, because even boxed copies contain a download code rather than a disc. Rockstar has not said whether the single-player game needs to stay connected after installation. Most console games, including Red Dead Redemption 2's story mode, can be played offline once installed and updated. See do you need internet for GTA 6?
What happens to GTA Online?
GTA Online on GTA V is expected to keep running after GTA 6 launches, according to reporting on Rockstar's plans. If you are choosing a console now, the GTA 6 console requirements hub compares all four. Your GTA Online characters, money and property belong to GTA V and do not carry into GTA 6's single-player game. Rockstar has not said whether anything will transfer to a future GTA 6 online mode.
Why launch without online?
Rockstar has not explained it, so this is our reading. Launching single-player first lets the studio focus on the story game and its stability on day one, then build the online world with more time. It is also a cleaner launch on servers: a single-player game does not depend on matchmaking working under record demand. Red Dead Online arrived about a month after Red Dead Redemption 2, as a beta, so a gap between the two is not new for Rockstar.
