Quick answer

Best overall: PS5 (Slim or Digital). It is the console GTA 6 was designed around, and most players are buying it on PS5. Best performance: PS5 Pro, listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced. Cheapest: Xbox Series S, with lower resolution and very little storage on the 512 GB model.

The Xbox Series X matches the PS5 in power and is a good pick if you already play on Xbox.

Every one of these consoles runs the full game, with the same story and world. The differences are image quality, storage and price. Because GTA 6 runs at 30 fps on consoles Reported, the gap between them shows mainly in sharpness and detail, not speed. Here is how to choose.

Pick by player

Most players: PS5 Digital or PS5 Slim

The PS5 is the baseline Rockstar designed GTA 6 around, and one analysis of pre-orders found more than three quarters were on PS5. Since the boxed game contains a download code rather than a disc, the Digital Edition loses nothing for GTA 6. The Slim's roughly 842 GB of usable space holds GTA 6 and several other big games.

Best picture: PS5 Pro

The PS5 Pro is the only console with a GTA 6-specific enhancement listed Official, and its 2 TB drive removes any storage worry. It costs much more, and Rockstar has not said what the enhancement includes, so it makes most sense if you have a large 4K TV. Read GTA 6 on PS5 Pro.

Already on Xbox: Series X

The Series X has slightly more raw graphics power than the PS5 and about 802 GB of usable storage. If your friends and library are on Xbox, it is a strong choice.

Lowest cost: Xbox Series S

The Series S is the cheapest way to play, but its graphics chip has well under half as much power as the others, and the 512 GB model has only about 364 GB of usable space. GTA 6 will take more than half of that. If you choose it, the 1 TB Series S is worth the extra. See GTA 6 on Xbox Series S.

Do not forget storage

Plan for about 230 GB of free space for GTA 6 and its first patch (estimate). If you keep many large games installed, budget for an SSD upgrade: an M.2 drive on PS5 or a Storage Expansion Card on Xbox. Check any console in the storage calculator.

What about waiting for PC?

GTA 6 has no PC version. A PC release is reported for early 2027 but not confirmed. A gaming PC that matches console quality costs far more than any console here. If you want to play this year, a console is the only option. Our console now or wait for PC guide compares the two paths.

Best console for GTA 6 FAQ

Is GTA 6 better on PS5 or Xbox Series X?

They should be very close, since both run at 30 FPS and have similar power. Rockstar has not announced any platform differences beyond the PS5 Pro enhancement.

Should I buy a PS5 Pro for GTA 6?

Only if you have a large 4K TV and want the best console picture. A base PS5 runs the full game, and the Pro's improvements have not been detailed.

What is the cheapest console that can play GTA 6?

The Xbox Series S. Choose the 1 TB model if you can, because GTA 6 takes more than half the usable space on the 512 GB version.

Do I need a disc drive for GTA 6?

No. The physical edition contains a download code, not a disc, according to Rockstar Support.
