GTA 6 File Size: How Many GB on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

GTA 6 will be one of the largest console downloads ever, and on some consoles it will take more than half the free space. The official size usually appears on the PlayStation Store and Xbox store pages around pre-load day. Until then, this page gives you the best estimate, the real free space on every console model, and the quickest ways to make room. When the real number is out, it replaces the estimate here and in the storage calculator at the same time.

How many GB is GTA 6?

Why 200 GB is believable: Red Dead Redemption 2 needed about 105 GB on PS4 in 2018 and later grew past 120 GB with updates. GTA 6 has a larger, denser world and higher-quality textures. Some outlets put the floor around 120 to 130 GB and the ceiling near 250 GB. We plan with 200 GB because it is the most specific figure available, and we add room for patches because day-one updates for big games are often 10 to 50 GB.

How much space does your console really have?

Advertised storage is not what you get. The system software reserves a large part of the drive. This is the space actually left for games Official for advertised sizes, measured figures for usable space:

The percentages use our 200 GB estimate. The Xbox Series S 512 GB stands out: GTA 6 alone will fill more than half of it, so you can keep only one or two other big games installed. Read will GTA 6 fit on Xbox Series S? for the details.

GTA 6 file size on PS5

On a PS5, GTA 6 installs to the internal SSD or to an M.2 SSD in the expansion slot. PS5 games cannot be played from a USB drive, although a USB drive can store them while you are not playing. A launch PS5 with a few large games already installed may not have 230 GB free. Adding a 1 TB or 2 TB M.2 drive is the simplest fix, and our best SSD for GTA 6 on PS5 guide lists drives that meet Sony's requirements. The PS5 Pro's 2 TB drive has plenty of room.

GTA 6 file size on Xbox Series X|S

On Xbox, Series X|S games must run from the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card. You can keep games on a USB drive and copy them back, which is faster than downloading again. The Series X has about 802 GB free out of the box. The 512 GB Series S has about 364 GB, which is the tightest fit of any console. A 1 TB expansion card solves it, and our expansion card guide covers the options.

Does the physical copy save space or data?

No. According to Rockstar Support, the GTA 6 box contains a download code, not a disc Official. Physical and digital buyers download the same full game. That also means anyone with a PS5 Digital Edition loses nothing by buying digitally, and anyone with a slow connection should plan the download early. Our download time table shows how long 200 GB takes at each internet speed.

How to be ready before pre-load

1. Pre-order digitally if you want to pre-load. Digital pre-loading opens at local midnight on 12 November 2026 Official.
2. Check your free space: on PS5 go to Settings, Storage. On Xbox go to Settings, System, Storage devices.
3. Free up about 230 GB. Move games you are not playing to a USB drive instead of deleting them.
4. Turn on automatic downloads and leave the console in rest mode (PS5) or standby with updates on (Xbox).
5. Use a wired connection for the download if you can. Wi-Fi far from the router can be far slower.

Full steps for both consoles are in the GTA 6 pre-load guide, and how to free up space covers storage menus in detail.

How big will GTA 6 be on PC?

Unknown, because there is no PC version yet. PC games are often larger than the console version because they ship higher-resolution texture options, so planning for 200 to 250 GB on an SSD is sensible Estimate. GTA V Enhanced, a much older game, already needs 105 GB on an SSD. See the GTA 6 PC requirements for the rest of the expected specs.
