How to Free Up Space for GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox

GTA 6 needs about 230 GB including patch room. Here is how to find what is taking your space and clear it on PS5 and Xbox without losing your games.

Quick answer

Aim for about 230 GB of free space before pre-load on 12 November 2026: an estimated about 200 GB for GTA 6 plus room for patches. Estimate The fastest way to get there is to move games you are not playing to a USB drive instead of deleting them.

Running out of space is the most common reason a pre-load fails. Both consoles make it easy to see what is using your storage and move it elsewhere. These steps work on every PS5 and Xbox Series model.

Free up space on PS5

  1. Open Settings, Storage, Console Storage. The bar shows how much is free.
  2. Select Games and Apps. The list shows each game's size, largest first.
  3. Choose games you are not playing and select Move to USB extended storage. PS5 games can be stored on USB and moved back later. PS4 games can even be played from USB.
  4. If you have no USB drive, select Delete. Your saves are kept on the console and, with PS Plus, in the cloud.
  5. Check Media Gallery for large video clips and Saved Data for games you no longer own.

Free up space on Xbox Series X|S

  1. Open My games and apps, then Manage, then Storage devices to see free space.
  2. In the full library, sort by Size to find the biggest games.
  3. Select a game, press the Menu button, choose Manage game and add-ons, then Move or copy to a USB drive. Series X|S games stored on USB must be moved back before you play them.
  4. Uninstall games you have finished. Xbox saves sync to the cloud automatically.
  5. Remove unused language packs or optional add-ons inside each game's manage menu.

Big games to check first

Call of Duty, NBA 2K, Forza and other big releases can each use 100 GB or more. Moving one or two of them often frees enough space for GTA 6 on its own.

If moving games is not enough

Add storage that the console can play games from: an M.2 SSD on PS5, or a Storage Expansion Card on Xbox. See the best SSD for GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox expansion cards for GTA 6. To see exactly how much you need, use the GTA 6 storage calculator.

What size USB drive should I get?

A 1 TB or 2 TB USB 3 hard drive or SSD is plenty for storing games you are not playing.
