For GTA 6 on PS5, pick a PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD of 1 TB or 2 TB with read speeds of 5,500 MB/s or faster, with a heatsink that fits Sony's size limits (or a slim drive plus a PS5-compatible heatsink). Official
1 TB roughly doubles a launch PS5's usable space, which is plenty for GTA 6 and several other big games.
You do not need a new SSD to play GTA 6: every PS5 can fit it. But a launch PS5 has about 667 GB for games, and GTA 6 plus patches needs about 230 GB (estimate). If you keep several large games installed, an M.2 SSD is the cleanest fix, and PS5 games run from it at full speed.
Sony's PS5 SSD requirements
| Requirement | What Sony specifies |
|---|---|
| Interface | PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe |
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB |
| Read speed | 5,500 MB/s or faster recommended |
| Length | 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110 |
| Width | Up to 25 mm with heatsink |
| Height | Up to 11.25 mm total with heatsink (8 mm above the board, 2.45 mm below) |
| Cooling | Heatsink or heat-dissipating structure required |

What size should you buy?
| SSD size | Adds roughly | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 TB | about 920 GB usable | GTA 6 plus three or four other big games |
| 2 TB | about 1.86 TB usable | Keeping most of your library installed |
| 4 TB | about 3.7 TB usable | Large collections, rarely needed |
For most people, 1 TB is the sweet spot for GTA 6. The storage calculator shows exactly how much room you would have with each size, and the GTA 6 file size guide tracks the official install size.
What to check before buying
- Gen4, not Gen3. Gen3 drives are not supported.
- Read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s. Slower Gen4 drives may work, but the PS5 warns you and some games could load slower.
- A heatsink that fits. Many drives sell a "PS5" version with a slim heatsink. If you buy a bare drive, add a heatsink under 11.25 mm total height.
- DRAM or a good controller. Well-known Gen4 drives from major brands with a strong track record are safer than unknown bargain drives.
We do not test drives ourselves. These criteria come from Sony's requirements and widely reported compatibility, so check the manufacturer's PS5 compatibility page for any model you pick.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying a Gen3 drive because it is cheap. The PS5 will not use it for PS5 games.
- Forgetting the heatsink height. Some gaming heatsinks are too tall for the PS5 cover. Stay within 11.25 mm total.
- Buying more than you need. If GTA 6 is your main game, 1 TB is plenty. Spend the difference on the game or a controller.
- Upgrading on launch night. Fit the drive before pre-load opens on 12 November 2026, so you are not formatting a drive while everyone else is downloading.
Does a faster SSD make GTA 6 run better?
Not in frame rate. GTA 6 runs at the same 30 fps whether it is on the internal drive or a supported M.2 drive. What storage speed affects is loading, and a drive that meets Sony's 5,500 MB/s recommendation should load like the internal SSD Estimate. That is why there is no benefit in paying extra for the very fastest Gen5-class drives on PS5: the console's slot is Gen4.
Installing it
Installing takes about 15 minutes with a small screwdriver. Our step-by-step PS5 SSD installation guide covers the launch model, Slim and Pro. After formatting, you can install GTA 6 straight to the new drive or move other games there.
FAQ
Do I need an SSD upgrade for GTA 6 on PS5?
No. GTA 6 fits on every PS5. An upgrade helps only if you want to keep many other big games installed too.
Can GTA 6 run from the PS5 M.2 SSD?
Yes. PS5 games run from a supported M.2 SSD the same way as from internal storage.
Does the PS5 SSD need a heatsink?
Yes. Sony requires a heatsink or heat-dissipating structure, within the size limits.
