How Much RAM Does GTA 6 Need? (8 vs 16 vs 32 GB)

There are no official PC specs yet. Here is a labelled estimate for 8, 16 and 32 GB, why 16 GB looks like the realistic minimum, and the cheapest way to upgrade.

Quick answer

Rockstar has not published GTA 6 PC requirements, because there is no PC version yet. Not announced Unknown

Our estimate: 16 GB of RAM is the realistic minimum, and 32 GB is the comfortable choice for high settings. 8 GB is likely to fall short. Estimate

RAM is one of the cheapest upgrades in a PC and one of the most common bottlenecks in big open-world games. GTA 6 is not on PC yet, but there are good clues about how much it will want.

8 GBBelow what big current games ask for. Expect stutter or failure to run wellEstimate
16 GBRealistic minimum for low to console-like settingsEstimate
32 GBComfortable for high settings, background apps and future updatesEstimate
64 GBMore than games need. Only useful for streaming, editing or heavy multitaskingEstimate

Why 16 GB is the realistic floor

  • GTA V Enhanced already recommends 16 GB of RAM on its official Steam listing Official. GTA 6 is a newer, bigger game.
  • The consoles have 16 GB of shared memory for the game, graphics and system together. A PC splits that into system RAM and graphics memory, and needs extra for Windows.
  • Players are already there: the September 2026 Steam Hardware Survey shows 32 GB systems (42%) overtaking 16 GB (38%) for the first time Reported.

Dual-channel matters

Two sticks (for example 2 x 8 GB) run in dual-channel mode and give the processor much more memory bandwidth than a single 16 GB stick. Many budget laptops and pre-built PCs ship with one stick. Adding a matching second stick is often the best value upgrade for gaming.

Does RAM speed matter?

Capacity comes first, speed second. Once you have enough RAM, faster memory gives a smaller boost, mostly in CPU-heavy scenes like busy city streets. On DDR4 systems, 3200 MHz in dual-channel is a sensible baseline. On newer DDR5 systems, 5600 to 6000 MHz is common and works well with current AMD and Intel processors Estimate. Make sure the faster speed is switched on in your PC's BIOS, often called XMP or EXPO, because many systems ship running memory at a slower default.

How to check your RAM

Press Ctrl, Shift and Esc, open the Performance tab, and click Memory. It shows the total, the speed and how many slots are used. More ways to check every part are in how to check your PC specs.

What to do now

If you have 8 GB, upgrading to 16 GB is safe to do now, because every modern game benefits. Going to 32 GB makes sense if you are building a new PC. For the rest of the spec, read the GTA 6 PC requirements estimate and check your graphics card with Can I run GTA 6? Graphics memory is a separate question, covered in how much VRAM GTA 6 needs.

FAQ

Can I play GTA 6 with 8 GB RAM?

There is no PC version yet. Our estimate is that 8 GB will not be enough for a smooth experience. Plan on 16 GB.

Will 16 GB RAM be enough for GTA 6?

Probably for low to console-like settings, based on GTA V Enhanced's recommended spec and the console hardware.

Is 32 GB RAM worth it for GTA 6?

If you are building a new PC, yes. It gives headroom for high settings and other apps. If you have 16 GB, wait for official specs before upgrading.
