GTA 6 is listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced on the PlayStation Store, so it will make use of the Pro's extra power. Official Rockstar and Sony have not said what improves: resolution, ray tracing, frame rate or a mix. Unknown
You do not need a PS5 Pro for GTA 6. Every PS5 runs it, at 30 fps according to Rockstar North. Reported
The PS5 Pro is Sony's most powerful console, and GTA 6 is the biggest game of its generation, so it is natural to ask whether the two belong together. The honest answer today is that we know GTA 6 gets Pro-specific improvements, but not which ones. This page sets out what the Pro can do, what that store tag has meant for other games, the rumours worth knowing, and how to decide.
What the PS5 Pro adds over the PS5
| PS5 | PS5 Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics | RDNA 2, 36 CUs, 10.28 TFLOPS | Upgraded GPU, 60 CUs, up to 45% faster rendering (Sony) |
| Ray tracing | Standard | Sony quotes two to three times faster ray tracing |
| Upscaling | Game-dependent | PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), AI upscaling |
| Processor | 8-core Zen 2, up to 3.5 GHz | Same Zen 2 family, slightly higher boost mode |
| Storage | 825 GB or 1 TB | 2 TB (about 1.86 TB usable) |
| US launch price | $499 (disc, 2020) | $699 (2024) |
Specs are Sony's official figures Official. The key line is the processor: it barely changes. The Pro is much better at graphics, but not much better at the CPU-heavy work, such as simulating traffic and crowds, that likely keeps GTA 6 at 30 FPS on the base console.
What "PS5 Pro Enhanced" usually means
Sony gives the tag to games that use the Pro's extra graphics power. In other games it has meant one or more of these:
- A sharper image, often through PSSR upscaling, at the same frame rate.
- Better ray tracing, such as reflections or lighting the base PS5 cannot handle.
- A higher or steadier frame rate in a performance mode.
- Higher detail settings, like longer draw distances or better shadows.
Which of these GTA 6 gets has not been announced. We will update this page when Rockstar, Sony or published technical analysis confirms it.
Will GTA 6 run at 60 FPS on PS5 Pro?
Not confirmed. Older reports said Sony engineers were helping Rockstar aim for 60 FPS on the Pro, and a September 2026 leak claimed 40 or 60 FPS modes. None of this comes from Rockstar or Sony Reported. Digital Foundry analysts have said GTA 6 could struggle to hold a stable 60 FPS even on the Pro, because its processor is close to the base PS5's. A 40 FPS mode, which works on 120 Hz TVs, would be a realistic middle ground if Rockstar offers one Estimate.
Is a PS5 Pro worth it for GTA 6?
Worth considering if: you have a large 4K TV with 120 Hz and VRR, you want the sharpest console version of GTA 6 and future games, or you need the storage anyway. The 2 TB drive alone removes any worry about fitting GTA 6.
Probably not worth it if: you already own a PS5 and play on a 1080p TV, or you are only upgrading in the hope of 60 FPS. Until Rockstar confirms a frame-rate boost, a base PS5 with a bigger SSD is the cheaper path. Compare full costs in the best console for GTA 6.
Getting the most from GTA 6 on PS5 Pro
- Use the HDMI cable that came with the console and a TV port that supports 4K at 120 Hz.
- Turn on VRR and 120 Hz output in the PS5's screen settings if your TV supports them.
- Check the game's graphics menu at launch for a Pro-specific mode.
