Yes, the Xbox Series S runs GTA 6. It is an official launch platform. Official Expect a lower resolution and some reduced detail compared with the Series X and PS5, at the same 30 FPS target. Estimate
The bigger issue is storage: the 512 GB model has about 364 GB free, and GTA 6 will take more than half of it.
The Xbox Series S is the cheapest console that plays GTA 6, so it gets a lot of attention from players who do not want to spend PS5 money. It runs the same game, with the same story and world. What changes is how sharp it looks and how much room you have left on the drive. Here is what is known, what is estimated, and how to decide.
Xbox Series S vs Series X and PS5 for GTA 6
| Xbox Series S | Xbox Series X | PS5 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Graphics power | 4 TFLOPS | 12.15 TFLOPS | 10.28 TFLOPS |
| Memory | 10 GB | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| Processor | 8-core Zen 2, 3.6 GHz | 8-core Zen 2, 3.8 GHz | 8-core Zen 2, up to 3.5 GHz |
| Usable storage | about 364 GB (512 GB) or 802 GB (1 TB) | about 802 GB | about 667 to 842 GB |
| GTA 6 frame rate | 30 FPS expected | 30 FPS | 30 FPS |
| GTA 6 resolution | Not announced | Not announced | Not announced |
The processor is nearly the same across all three, which is good news for the Series S: if GTA 6's 30 FPS limit comes from the CPU, the Series S can hold the same frame rate. The graphics chip is where it falls behind, with about a third of the Series X's power and less memory. That usually means a lower resolution and fewer effects, rather than a slower game.
What resolution will GTA 6 run at on Series S?
Rockstar has not said Unknown. An unofficial infographic that spread online claims 1080p at 30 FPS with ray tracing off. It has no official source, so treat it as a guess. Most big games on Series S render somewhere between 900p and 1440p and upscale the image. A 1080p TV will look fine. On a large 4K TV, the Series S image will look softer than the Series X or PS5.
After launch, we will add measured resolution and frame-rate figures from published technical analysis. Our GTA 6 FPS and resolution guide tracks every console.
The 512 GB storage problem
This is the part that catches most Series S owners out. The 512 GB model leaves about 364 GB for games. With GTA 6 estimated at about 200 GB and about 230 GB needed including patches, you will have roughly 134 GB left for everything else. That is one or two other large games.
- Move games you are not playing to a USB drive. Series X|S games can be stored there and copied back, but not played from it.
- Add a 1 TB Storage Expansion Card if you want to keep several big games installed. See Xbox expansion cards for GTA 6.
- If you are buying now, the 1 TB Series S avoids the problem.

Should you buy a Series S for GTA 6?
Good choice if: you mainly want to play GTA 6 on a budget, you play on a 1080p or smaller TV, or you want a second console for another room.
Think twice if: you have a large 4K TV and care about sharpness, you plan to keep many big games installed, or you might want the best version of future games. The PS5, Series X or PS5 Pro make more sense there. Our best console for GTA 6 guide compares the full cost of each.
