If your Xbox Series X|S does not have about 230 GB free for GTA 6, a Storage Expansion Card is the only extra storage that can run it. USB drives can store Series X|S games but not play them. Official
A 1 TB card suits most players, especially on the 512 GB Series S.
Xbox Series X|S games are built around the console's fast storage, so Microsoft only lets them run from the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card that plugs into the back. The card performs like the internal drive, so GTA 6 will play the same from it.
Who needs an expansion card for GTA 6?
| Console | Usable storage | Need a card? |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series S 512 GB | about 364 GB | Likely, if you keep other big games installed |
| Xbox Series S 1 TB | about 802 GB | Usually not |
| Xbox Series X 1 TB | about 802 GB | Usually not |
GTA 6 is estimated at about 200 GB, and about 230 GB with patch room. On a 512 GB Series S, that leaves around 134 GB for everything else. Check your own numbers with the storage calculator.
Which cards and sizes exist
Official cards are made by Seagate and Western Digital, in several sizes from 512 GB upward. They are designed for Xbox Series X|S and work identically in both consoles. A 1 TB card more than doubles a 512 GB Series S. A 2 TB card suits players who keep a large library installed. Only buy cards labelled for Xbox Series X|S, and check current prices, since cards are often discounted around Black Friday, which falls on 27 November 2026.
We do not test cards ourselves. Both brands are official Microsoft partners, so performance is the same at the same capacity.
Expansion card vs USB drive
| Storage Expansion Card | USB drive | |
|---|---|---|
| Play GTA 6 from it | Yes | No (store only) |
| Play Xbox One games from it | Yes | Yes |
| Cost per GB | Higher | Much lower |
A cheap USB drive is still useful: move games you are not playing onto it to make room for GTA 6, then move them back later. That is faster than downloading again. More in playing GTA 6 from an external drive.
Card or a bigger console?
If you are still choosing a console, the maths is simple. A 1 TB Xbox Series S has about 802 GB of usable space, the same as a Series X, while a 512 GB Series S plus a 1 TB card ends up with more total space but costs more than the step up to the 1 TB console in many regions. Compare current prices before deciding. If you already own a 512 GB Series S, a card is the easiest upgrade, since it plugs in from the back with no tools.
Can you use a cheaper M.2 drive inside the Xbox?
Not officially. Unlike the PS5, Xbox Series X|S has no user-accessible M.2 slot, and opening the console to swap the internal drive is not supported by Microsoft and can void your warranty. The expansion card is the only supported way to add storage that runs Series X|S games. See GTA 6 on Xbox Series S for what the console can do.
Setting it up
Plug the card into the expansion slot on the back of the console. It is ready in seconds with no formatting step. To install GTA 6 to it, go to Settings, System, Storage devices, and set it as the default install location before pre-load on 12 November 2026.
