GTA 6 is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB in North America and PEGI 18 in the UK and Europe. Reported Australia lists it as R18+ and New Zealand as R18. It is a game for adults.
The ESRB descriptors include intense violence, blood and gore, strong sexual content, nudity, strong language and drug and alcohol use.
Every main Grand Theft Auto game has carried an adult rating, and GTA 6 is no different. Parents buying it as a gift, or players checking whether a younger sibling can play, should know what the ratings cover. Here are the ratings by region and how to manage access on each console.

What the content descriptors mean
The ESRB listing gives these descriptors: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol, plus an In-Game Purchases notice. PEGI's labels cover drugs, sexual content, extreme violence, nudity and in-game purchases. Australian and New Zealand listings name sex scenes specifically. In plain terms, GTA 6 contains graphic violence, explicit sexual material and drug use, as GTA V did.
What is the age requirement for GTA 6?
The age requirement follows the rating: 17 and over in North America under the ESRB's M rating, and 18 and over across the UK and Europe under PEGI 18. Retailers and platforms use these ratings for purchase checks and parental controls. Rockstar has not announced a separate ID check to play. Some countries require age verification for online features through console accounts, explained in does GTA 6 require ID?
Setting parental controls
- PS5: go to Settings, Family and Parental Controls, then set an age level for games for each child account. You can also limit play time and spending.
- Xbox: use the Xbox Family Settings app or Settings, Account, Family settings, to set content limits by age, screen time and purchase approval.
- Purchases: because GTA 6 lists in-game purchases, require approval for spending on child accounts.
