Buy the PS5 Digital Edition if GTA 6 is your main reason. According to Rockstar Support, the physical GTA 6 box contains a download code, not a disc. Official Disc and digital players download the same full game, so a disc drive adds nothing for GTA 6.
The PS5 Digital Edition plays GTA 6 exactly the same as the disc model.
Usually the choice between a disc and digital PS5 comes down to whether you buy boxed games. GTA 6 changes the maths: there is no disc in the box. Rockstar Support has stated that physical editions contain a code you redeem and download. Some reports suggest a disc might come later, but nothing official confirms it Reported.
What you get either way
| PS5 Digital | PS5 Disc | |
|---|---|---|
| Runs GTA 6 | Yes, identically | Yes, identically |
| Boxed GTA 6 works | Yes, redeem the code | Yes, redeem the code |
| Full download needed | Yes, about about 200 GB (estimate) | Yes, same download |
| Plays other disc games and Blu-ray films | No (unless you add the detachable drive) | Yes |
| Can resell games | No for digital purchases | Yes for disc games, but GTA 6 codes cannot be resold once used |
The current PS5 Slim Digital Edition also accepts Sony's detachable disc drive if you change your mind later.
When the disc model still makes sense
- You already own PS4 or PS5 games on disc that you want to keep playing.
- You buy second-hand games or trade games in.
- You watch Blu-ray or 4K Blu-ray films.
- Your internet is slow or capped, and you buy other games that come on disc (it will not help with GTA 6).
Slow or limited internet?
Since even the boxed copy must be downloaded, plan ahead. Pre-loading starts on 12 November 2026, which gives you a week to download before launch. At 25 Mbps, 200 GB takes most of a day. See how long GTA 6 takes to download and the pre-load guide.
Codes and regions
Because the boxed game is a code, region rules matter. PlayStation codes only redeem on accounts from the same region group as the store that sold them, and the UK is its own group. Buy from a shop in your own country to avoid problems. Prices for each region are on the GTA 6 price page. Once a code is redeemed it is tied to your account, so a used boxed copy has no value to anyone else.
