You do not need a new controller for GTA 6: the DualSense on PS5 and the Xbox Wireless Controller on Xbox are made for it. Official Upgrade to the DualSense Edge or Xbox Elite Series 2 only if you want back paddles, adjustable triggers and swappable sticks.

Rockstar has not announced any controller-specific features for GTA 6 yet, such as DualSense haptics or adaptive trigger effects. This guide covers the official options and when they are worth the money. We do not test controllers ourselves.

Third-party controllers
Licensed third-party controllers can be good value, and some offer Hall-effect sticks that resist drift. On PS5, check the controller is officially licensed for PS5 games, because unlicensed pads may only work with PS4 titles. On Xbox, look for the "Designed for Xbox" label. Third-party pads usually lack the DualSense's haptics and adaptive triggers.
Is a pro controller worth it for GTA 6?
Back paddles let you jump, reload or switch weapons without taking your thumb off the right stick, which helps in shootouts. Trigger stops can make shooting feel faster. If you mainly drive and explore, the standard controller is fine. If you play many shooters as well, a pro pad can pay off over time.
Controllers for a future PC version
If GTA 6 comes to PC, the Xbox Wireless Controller works natively on Windows, as it does with GTA V. The DualSense also works on PC, especially through Steam's controller support. Rockstar has not announced PC controller features for GTA 6, since the PC version itself is not announced.
Comfort and settings tips
- Check GTA 6's control settings at launch for sensitivity, aim assist and button remapping.
- Both consoles also offer system-level button remapping in their accessibility menus.
- Keep a charging cable or spare battery pack nearby for launch night.
- Stick drift is a common wear issue on all pads. Many players keep a second controller as a backup.
