Any decent headphones work for GTA 6. On PS5, plugging wired headphones into the DualSense gives you Sony's Tempest 3D Audio for free. On Xbox, turn on Windows Sonic (free) or Dolby Atmos for spatial sound. A dedicated wireless headset adds convenience and a better mic.
GTA 6 is not a competitive online game at launch, so you do not need an expensive "pro gaming" headset. What matters is comfort for long sessions, clear sound and support for your console's 3D audio. Rockstar has not detailed GTA 6's audio features per platform yet. We do not test headsets ourselves, so check independent reviews of any model you consider.
How console 3D audio works
| Console | 3D audio | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Tempest 3D Audio | Works with any headphones through the DualSense jack, USB or compatible wireless headsets. Turn on 3D Audio in Settings, Sound |
| Xbox Series X|S | Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos for Headphones, DTS Headphone:X | Choose in Settings, General, Volume and audio output. Windows Sonic is free, Atmos and DTS need an app licence unless your headset includes it |

What to look for
- Comfort: light weight, soft ear cushions and a clamp that does not pinch over hours.
- Connection: wired via the controller is cheapest and has no lag. Wireless USB-dongle headsets made for your console are the most convenient. Bluetooth audio does not work on PS5 or Xbox without an adapter.
- Platform support: Xbox wireless headsets need Xbox support built in. Many PlayStation wireless headsets also work on PC.
- Microphone: only matters for party chat or a future online mode.
- Open or closed back: open-back headphones sound more spacious but leak sound. Closed-back block more noise.
Options by budget
- Budget: wired headphones or a wired gaming headset into the controller. On PS5 this already gives full 3D audio.
- Mid-range: official or well-known wireless headsets designed for your console, such as Sony's Pulse range on PS5 or Microsoft's Xbox Wireless Headset.
- High-end: premium wireless gaming headsets with multi-platform dongles, or quality hi-fi headphones on a wired connection.
Prefer speakers?
If you play in the living room, a soundbar or speaker system connected through your TV's HDMI eARC port works well with both consoles. Choose a soundbar with a dedicated centre channel so dialogue stays clear during cutscenes, and keep the TV's game mode on so audio stays in sync.
Setup tips for GTA 6
- Turn off your TV's virtual surround when using headphones, so only the console handles 3D audio.
- On PS5, use the 3D audio profile test in Settings, Sound to pick the profile that sounds most natural to you.
- Check GTA 6's audio menu at launch for a headphone or dynamic range option. A wide dynamic range suits headphones in a quiet room.
