Minimum vs Recommended Specs: What They Mean for GTA 6

Minimum does not mean playable at good settings, and recommended does not mean maxed out. Here is how to read spec sheets, using Rockstar's own as examples.

Quick answer

Minimum specs are the weakest hardware a game will start and run on, usually at low settings, low resolution and around 30 FPS. Recommended specs are what the publisher suggests for a good experience, typically medium to high settings at 1080p. Neither tells you what you need for maximum settings.

When Rockstar publishes GTA 6 PC requirements, they will most likely come as a minimum and a recommended tier, like its previous games. Knowing what those labels mean helps you avoid two common mistakes: assuming "minimum" means a good experience, and overspending to beat "recommended" when you do not need to.

What each tier usually means

TierUsually meansTypical experience
MinimumThe game starts and is playableLow settings, 720p to 1080p, around 30 FPS, possible stutter
RecommendedThe publisher's intended experienceMedium to high settings, 1080p, smoother play
Beyond recommendedNot listed on most sheetsHigh or ultra, 1440p or 4K, higher frame rates

Publishers define tiers differently and rarely state the resolution or frame rate each tier targets, so treat these as general patterns Estimate.

Rockstar's own examples

GTA V Enhanced (2025) lists a minimum of a GTX 1630 or RX 6400 with 4 GB of VRAM and 8 GB of RAM, and recommends an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT with 16 GB of RAM Official. Red Dead Redemption 2 (2019) listed a GTX 770 2 GB minimum and a GTX 1060 6 GB recommended Official. In both cases, the minimum was roughly at or below the original console's power, and the recommended spec a step above. Full lists: GTA 5 PC requirements and RDR2 PC requirements.

How to read a spec sheet

  • Check every line, not just the GPU. RAM, VRAM and storage type (SSD required?) rule out more PCs than people expect.
  • Compare your weakest part. A fast graphics card cannot make up for 8 GB of RAM or a hard drive.
  • Look for the SSD and OS lines. Newer Rockstar specs already require an SSD and recommend Windows 11.
  • Remember laptops differ. A laptop GPU with the same name as a listed desktop card is usually slower.

What to expect from GTA 6's specs

GTA 6 has no PC version or official requirements yet Unknown. If Rockstar follows its past pattern, the minimum will sit around base-console power and the recommended spec a step above. Our labelled estimate is on GTA 6 PC requirements, and Can I run GTA 6? will switch to official tiers the day they are published.

FAQ

Can I play a game below minimum specs?

Sometimes it starts, but performance is usually poor and some games refuse to launch. It is not something publishers support.

Does recommended mean ultra settings?

No. Recommended usually means a good experience at medium to high settings, often at 1080p.

Which part matters most?

Your weakest part. In open-world games the graphics card and VRAM often matter most, but RAM and storage can rule a PC out.
