Red Dead Redemption 2 PC Requirements (The Best GTA 6 Preview)

Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar's last big console-first game to reach PC. Its official specs, and how it scaled up, are the best preview of a GTA 6 port.

Quick answer

Red Dead Redemption 2's official PC requirements: minimum Core i5-2500K or FX-6300, 8 GB RAM and a GTX 770 2 GB or R9 280 3 GB. Recommended Core i7-4770K or Ryzen 5 1500X, 12 GB RAM and a GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 480 4 GB. Both need 150 GB of storage. Official

Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on PS4 and Xbox One in October 2018 and reached PC about a year later, on the Rockstar Games Launcher on 5 November 2019 and on Steam on 5 December 2019. It is Rockstar's most recent console-first open world to make that jump, so its specs are a useful guide to how a GTA 6 PC version might be pitched.

How RDR2 scaled from console to PC

On PS4, Red Dead Redemption 2 ran at 30 FPS. Rockstar's PC minimum, a GTX 770 class card, sat around the PS4's graphics level, and the recommended GTX 1060 6 GB was roughly in line with the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. In other words, Rockstar pitched the PC minimum at about base-console power and the recommended spec a step above Estimate. The PC version then added options that went far beyond the consoles, including higher frame rates and draw distances, and it was famously demanding at maximum settings.

What the PC version added

Rockstar used the extra year to add PC-only features to RDR2: unlocked frame rates, support for ultrawide screens, a much longer list of graphics options, and a choice between the Vulkan and DirectX 12 graphics APIs. Later updates added DLSS support. If GTA 6 follows the same path, expect the PC version to offer far more settings than the consoles, which is also why its maximum settings could demand far more than its minimum spec suggests.

Storage: RDR2 vs newer Rockstar games

RDR2 asks for 150 GB but does not list an SSD as required, so it can run from a hard drive with longer loading. Rockstar's newer PC release, GTA V Enhanced, does require an SSD at minimum, which shows how the studio's expectations have moved. For GTA 6, plan on an SSD and around 200 GB or more. See the GTA 6 file size guide and the official GTA 5 PC requirements for comparison.

What RDR2 suggests for GTA 6 on PC

If Rockstar repeats the RDR2 approach, a GTA 6 minimum might land near Xbox Series S or base PS5 power, with a recommended spec a step above. Today that would point to roughly an RTX 3050 to RTX 3060 class card for minimum and RTX 3060 Ti to RTX 4060 Ti class for recommended, with 16 GB of RAM and an SSD Estimate. This is reasoning from history, not a leak. The full labelled estimate is on GTA 6 PC requirements.

The timing clue matters too. RDR2 took about 12 months to reach PC, and GTA 5 took about 19. A reported Q1 2027 GTA 6 PC release would be much faster. Read is GTA 6 on PC? for the latest.

FAQ

Can RDR2 run on 8 GB RAM?

Yes, 8 GB is the official minimum. Rockstar recommends 12 GB.

How big is Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC?

The Steam listing asks for 150 GB of free space.

If my PC runs RDR2, will it run GTA 6?

Not necessarily. GTA 6 was built for PS5-class hardware, a big step above the PS4 that RDR2 targeted. Check our GTA 6 estimate and the Can I run GTA 6 checker.
