GTA 6 Downloading Slowly? How to Speed It Up

GTA 6 is estimated at about 200 GB, and millions of people will download it in the same week. Some slowness is server load you cannot control, but most of the speed you lose is at home. Work through these fixes in order.

Fixes that help most

1. Use an Ethernet cable. Wi-Fi through walls can lose half your speed or more. A cable from router to console is the biggest single improvement.
2. Pause and resume. Downloads come from content delivery servers, and resuming can connect you to a faster one.
3. Free up your connection. Pause other downloads, cloud backups and video streaming on other devices.
4. Let it run in rest mode (PS5) or sleep mode (Xbox). Consoles download at full speed when no game is running.
5. Restart the router and console if speeds stay low for a long time.

Timing matters

The first hours after pre-load opens at midnight, and launch night itself, are the busiest. A download started later on pre-load day, or during the week, often runs faster. You have a full week between pre-load and the 19 November 2026 release.

Check your real speed

Run the console's network test (PS5: Settings, Network, Connection Status, Test Internet Connection. Xbox: Settings, General, Network settings, Test network speed). If the console's speed is far below your plan, the problem is at home, usually Wi-Fi. If the test is fast but the download slow, it is probably server load, so wait or pause and resume. Compare with the download time table.

Optional tweaks

• Change DNS to a public provider in the console's network settings. It sometimes helps reach a closer server, though results vary.
• Move the router closer to the console or use a mesh point nearby if a cable is not possible.
• Check data caps with your provider, since some slow you down after a monthly limit.
