At an estimated about 200 GB, GTA 6 takes about 5.5 hours at 100 Mbps, about 2 hours at 300 Mbps and about 17.5 hours at 25 Mbps. Estimate
Pre-loading opens on 12 November 2026, a full week before launch, so even slow connections can finish in time.
GTA 6 will be one of the largest downloads most players have ever done, and boxed copies contain a download code instead of a disc, so everyone downloads the full game. The table below uses the current size estimate and updates automatically when the official size is published.
GTA 6 download time by internet speed
| Internet speed | Time for about 200 GB |
|---|---|
| 25 Mbps | 22 h 13 min |
| 50 Mbps | 11 h 7 min |
| 100 Mbps | 5 h 33 min |
| 200 Mbps | 2 h 47 min |
| 300 Mbps | 1 h 51 min |
| 500 Mbps | 1 h 7 min |
| 1000 Mbps | 33 min |
Assumes about 80% of your plan speed reaches the console, which is typical over a good connection. Wi-Fi far from the router can be much slower. Size used: about 200 GB Estimate
How we worked it out
Internet plans are sold in megabits per second, and game sizes are in gigabytes. One gigabyte is 8,000 megabits, so a 200 GB download is 1.6 million megabits. Real downloads rarely reach the full plan speed, so we assume about 80% of it reaches your console over a good connection. On busy pre-load and launch nights, or over weak Wi-Fi, it can be much less. Treat the table as a best-case guide Estimate.
How to download GTA 6 faster
- Use a cable. An Ethernet cable from the router to the console is the biggest single improvement. Wi-Fi through walls can cut speed by half or more.
- Pre-load early. The first hours after pre-load opens at midnight are the busiest. Downloading later that day or during the week is often faster.
- Pause other downloads and streaming on your network while GTA 6 downloads.
- Use rest mode or sleep mode. Consoles download at full speed when you are not playing.
- Restart the download if it stalls. Pausing and resuming can connect you to a faster server.
Setup steps for both consoles are in the GTA 6 pre-load guide. If speeds are poor, see GTA 6 downloading slowly.
Check your real console speed
Your plan speed and the speed your console actually gets can be very different. Test it before pre-load day. On PS5, go to Settings, Network, Connection Status, and choose Test Internet Connection. On Xbox, go to Settings, General, Network settings, and choose Test network speed and statistics. Use the download figure from the test with the table above. If the console result is far below your plan, a cable or moving the router closer usually fixes it.
Data caps
If your internet plan has a monthly data limit, a 200 GB download plus a day-one patch could use a large share of it. Check your plan before pre-load day. Downloading during off-peak hours, if your provider offers unmetered night-time data, can help.
Day-one patch
Big games often get an update at launch. It can be anywhere from a few GB to tens of GB and must download before you play, even if you pre-loaded. Keep your console online on launch night and leave free space for it. Use the storage calculator to check you have room.
