GTA 6 Launch Day Checklist: Get Your Console Ready

Ten minutes of setup the week before means you play the moment GTA 6 unlocks instead of watching a progress bar. Work through this list in order.

Quick answer

Before 19 November 2026: free about 230 GB, pre-order digitally or redeem your boxed code, pre-load from 12 November 2026, update your console, set your TV to Game Mode, charge your controller, and keep the console online for the day-one patch.

GTA 6 launch night will be one of the busiest moments ever for PlayStation Network and Xbox servers. The players who start smoothly are the ones who set everything up days in advance. Here is the full list, in the order to do it.

The week before (from 12 November)

  1. Check your storage. Aim for about 230 GB free. Use the storage calculator and the steps in how to free up space.
  2. Secure your copy. Pre-order digitally, or buy a boxed copy from 12 November and redeem its code on the right account and region.
  3. Pre-load. Pre-loading opens at local midnight on 12 November 2026. Follow the pre-load guide for PS5 or Xbox.
  4. Turn on automatic updates and rest or sleep mode so patches download while the console is off.
  5. Test your connection and use a cable if Wi-Fi is slow. See download times by speed.

The day before

  1. Update the console's system software. PS5: Settings, System, System Software. Xbox: Settings, System, Updates.
  2. Set your console as primary or home. PS5: Settings, Users and Accounts, Other, Console Sharing and Offline Play. Xbox: Settings, General, Personalisation, My home Xbox. This lets the game start even if servers are busy.
  3. Set up your TV: Game Mode on, motion smoothing off, VRR and 120 Hz on if available, HDR calibrated. See best TV settings for GTA 6.
  4. Charge your controller and keep a USB cable nearby.
  5. Check the unlock time in your time zone on the release time page.

Launch night

  1. Leave the console online. A day-one patch may download at unlock.
  2. If the game will not start, wait a few minutes and try again before reinstalling. Licence checks can be slow on busy servers.
  3. Check the game's settings menu for display options before you start the story.

Common launch problems

"Not enough storage" messageFree more than the download size, consoles need extra room to install

Download very slowUse a cable, pause other downloads, or pause and resume

FAQ

What should I do before GTA 6 launches?

Free about 230 GB, pre-load from 12 November, update your console, set it as primary or home, and set your TV to Game Mode.

Will there be a day-one patch for GTA 6?

Rockstar has not said, but most big games have one. Keep spare space and leave the console online at unlock.

Why should I set my console as primary?

It lets digital games start without contacting the servers, which helps if PlayStation Network or Xbox network are busy on launch night.
