VRAM (video RAM) is the memory built into your graphics card. It holds what the card needs to draw each frame: textures, 3D models, lighting data and the image itself. When a game needs more VRAM than your card has, it stutters, shows blurry textures or forces lower settings.
Your PC has two kinds of memory that matter for games. System RAM serves the processor. VRAM sits on the graphics card, right next to the graphics chip, and is much faster for graphics work. Games like GTA 6 lean heavily on VRAM because a big open world is full of detailed textures that must be ready the moment you look at them.
What VRAM stores
- Textures: the images wrapped over every surface. Higher texture settings use far more VRAM.
- Geometry: the 3D shapes of buildings, cars and people.
- Lighting and shadow data, including ray tracing structures if enabled.
- The frames themselves, which grow with resolution. 4K needs much more than 1080p.
What happens when VRAM runs out
The card starts swapping data with system RAM, which is much slower. You see sudden stutters, textures that load late or look smeared, and sometimes crashes. Lowering texture quality and resolution reduces VRAM use more than any other setting.
VRAM vs system RAM
| VRAM | System RAM | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | On the graphics card | On the motherboard |
| Used by | The graphics chip | The processor and Windows |
| Upgradable | No, only by changing the card | Yes, by adding sticks |
| Typical gaming amount | 8 to 16 GB | 16 to 32 GB |
The PS5 handles this differently, with 16 GB of shared memory used for both. For RAM advice, see how much RAM GTA 6 needs.
How to check your VRAM
Press Ctrl, Shift and Esc, open Performance, and click GPU. "Dedicated GPU memory" is your VRAM. Ignore "shared GPU memory", which is borrowed system RAM. Full steps: how to check your PC specs.
Why GTA 6 will care
Rockstar's GTA V Enhanced already recommends an 8 GB card Official, and GTA 6 is a newer, denser world built for consoles with 16 GB of shared memory. We expect 8 GB to be the comfortable minimum for console-like settings and 4 GB cards to struggle Estimate. Card-by-card verdicts are in GTA 6 VRAM requirements.
FAQ
Can I add more VRAM to my graphics card?
No. VRAM is soldered onto the card. The only way to get more is a different graphics card.
Is 8 GB VRAM enough for gaming?
For 1080p and many 1440p games, yes. Some new open-world games push past it at high texture settings.
Does more VRAM mean more FPS?
Not directly. Enough VRAM prevents stutter, but frame rate depends mostly on the graphics chip's speed.
